How to Empty a Water Trap

There are many machines in the lab that require compressed air to operate. Most of the machines, including the air compressor have a water trap. The water trap separates the water from the air that is created by the air compressor, due to humidity.

The water trap should be checked once each week. If you don't check the water traps each week, you could end up with excessive water in your airlines. This water can damage the machines and will cause your air nozzle to blow mists of water.

To check your water trap, first locate it on each machine, if applicable. (The pictured trap is full completely full of water)

First, remove pressure from the regulator by disconnecting the quick connect from the regulator. (Note: If you are emptying the water trap on the air compressor, you will have to close the output valve completely.)

After the air is disconnected, you can unscrew the lower half of the regulator. Normally it is clear so you can see the water, but some older versions are black and will need to be unscrewed to assess any water.

Dump the water our and screw the water trap back together. Ensure that if the rubber O-ring came off that it is put back in place before re-assembly.
